Avrich spent much of his academic life preserving the histories of the anarchist movements in the United States and Russia, and, as noted on Wikipedia, sought to communicate to his students an "affection and sense of solidarity with anarchists as people, rather than as militants." He was described as a "trusted friend" to many older anarchists whom he had met and interviewed, saving their stories for history.

As I mentioned in a prior post, he also wrote about Sacco and Vanzetti and his is the only history that mentioned the bombing of my great-great-aunt's and -uncle's home after my great-great-uncle, a juror, defended in a newspaper interview the verdict, something my great-great-uncle and I would have heatedly debated, had I known him.

Avrich writes with great understanding and empathy for what motivated the Haymarket martyrs to advocate anarchism and the irrefutable fact that they were innocent of the bombing for which they were convicted and executed. He writes movingly of Lucy Parsons who is too often forgotten in accounts of the tradgedy. His book "Sacco and Vanzetti: The Anarchist" background explores the political activism of Sacco and Vanzetti and presents them as far more sophisticated and
active than the simplistic versions of them portrayed in song.

Anarchists are often mischaracterized and lampooned today, but Avrich took their movement seriously and his books are profundly informative and well-researched. For anyone seeking to know who the martyrs and other anarchists were beyond the popular propeganda about mad, misguided bombers, I'd recommend Averich's books as a great place to start.

Thanks for all you do; posts like this are what make this blog my favorite.
Feilimid O'Broinhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01684099397717301472noreply@blogger.com
