João Bosco – Galos De Briga (1976)

João Bosco de Freitas Mucci, known professionally as João Bosco, is a Brazilian singer-songwriter and guitarist. In the 1970s he established his reputation in música popular Brasileira (Portuguese: "Brazilian pop music") with lyricist Aldir Blanc.

Born in Ponte Nova in 1946, Bosco cut his musical teeth in a family in which music was as important as eating and sleeping. His mother was an accomplished violinist, his father a singer of samba, his sister a concert pianist, and his brother a composer. While attending Ouro Preto University he became steeped in American jazz (Miles Davis in particular) and the bossa nova sound of João Gilberto and Antonio Carlos Jobim, it was also at university that he met lyricist Vinicius de Moraes, who contributed his elegant, poetic lyrics to Bosco's music. It was not long after that record companies began offering Bosco and de Moraes their services. Later in the '70s, Bosco became musically involved with Aldir Blanc, a psychiatrist who'd decided to give up his practice to become a lyricist

This album is a collection of classic early material including mysterious ballads and boleros, strong samba contributions, and surrealistic and irreverent lyrics by longtime partner Aldir Blanc.

Pale Saints – Some New Songs By Pale Saints (1988)

The Pale Saints were an alternative rock / shoegaze band from Leeds, UK, formed in 1987 and disbanded in 1996. They drew from a deceptively deep pool of influences and teased out distinctive traits that charmed the visionary 4AD label, and consequently listeners for whom shoegaze was a term of endearment. The English band developed their unique strain of dream pop by synthesizing elements of connected bygone movements such as West Coast psychedelia, the paisley underground, and C-86, applying avant-folk, pure pop, and the spectral post-punk advancements of their elder labelmates along the way. Their three albums of increasing scope and sprawl -- namely The Comforts of Madness (1990) and In Ribbons (1992), both of which charted, followed by Slow Buildings (1994) -- left lasting imprints.

These tapes were sent out to friends and fanzines, to spread the word about the Pale Saints. This led to their flexi coming out in the summer of 1988, featuring 'Children Break'. This demo was recorded in May 1988.

Silvio Rodríguez – Al Final De Este Viaje (1978)

Released in 1978, "Al Final de Este Viaje" is the second album from nueva trova pioneer Silvio Rodriguez. Consisting of just guitar and vocals, the sparse arrangement captures all of the melancholic beauty the Cuban singer/songwriter would become renowned for.

The album was recorded in Madrid, Spain at Sonoland Studios, in 1978. It features Silvio Rodriguez accompanied only by his acoustic guitar, and includes songs composed between 1968 and 1970. It is one of his most straightforward albums, without the use of more complex arrangements.

The collection includes some of his best-known songs, considered classics of Latin American popular music, such as Ojalá, Canción del Elegido and Óleo de Mujer Con Sombrero.

Stéphane Grappelli - Young Django (1979)

Django Reinhardt was a legendary Romani-French guitarist, He was the first hugely influential jazz figure to emerge from Europe and the person most credited with developing the style known as gypsy jazz, jazz manouche, or hot club jazz. Reinhardt came up with a unique way of propelling the acoustic guitar into the front line of a jazz combo in the days before amplification became widespread. He would spin joyous, arcing, marvelously inflected solos above the thrumming groundwork of two rhythm guitars and a bass, with cohort Stephane Grappelli's elegantly gliding violin serving as the perfect foil.

The French jazz violinist Stéphane Grappelli was born 26 January 1908 iand died 1 December 1997 in Paris, France. He was born Stéfano Grappelli but had his first name gallicized to Stéphane. He was billed as Stéphane Grappelly at first, but the last name spelling on recordings changed to Grappelli in the 1960s, although he still signed his name as "Grappelly."
One of the greatest violin jazz prebop players (but also an occasional pianist), Stéphane Grappelli is known for his legendary collaboration with Django Reinhardt in the '30s and '40s in their Quintette Du Hot Club De France.

The group disbanded when the war broke (Grappelli went in London while Django stayed in France). After the war, he appeared on hundreds of recordings including sessions with Oscar Peterson, Jean-Luc Ponty, Gary Burton and countless other great musicians (including few recordings with Django Reinhardt again).
He never stopped playing worldwide until his death at the age of 89.

This album finds veteran violinist Stephane Grappelli joined by bassist Niels Pedersen and guitarists Philip Catherine and Larry Coryell for a memorable tribute to Django Reinhardt. Grappelli has recorded many Reinhardt memorial albums through the years but this one is particularly special for both Coryell and Catherine go out of their way to display the unexpected influence that Reinhardt has had on their styles. The guitarists contribute a song apiece and also enjoy playing seven compositions co-written by Django and Grappelli.

The album was recorded: January 19-21, 1979 at Tonstudio Zuckerfabrik, Stuttgart/West Germany

Lightnin Hopkins - Down Home Blues (1965)

Sam Hopkins was a Texas country bluesman of the highest caliber whose career began in the 1920s and stretched all the way into the 1980s. Along the way, Hopkins watched the genre change remarkably, but he never appreciably altered his mournful Lone Star sound, which translated onto both acoustic and electric guitar.

Hopkins' nimble dexterity made intricate boogie riffs seem easy, and his fascinating penchant for improvising lyrics to fit whatever situation might arise made him a beloved blues troubadour.

"Down Home Blues" was recorded in 1964 and released on the Bluesville label.

Jack Elliott - Hootenanny With Jack Elliott (1964)

First posted on February 24, 2016:

This friday will be the opening of this years "Festival Musik und Politik". The festival remembers the history of "hootenanny" in East Berlin and goes back to the year 1966. This is a good opportunity to post an album related to the history of "hootenanny" in the USA.

Ramblin' Jack Elliott is one of folk music's most enduring characters. Since he first came on the scene in the late '50s, Elliott influenced everyone from Bob Dylan and Pete Seeger to the Rolling Stones and the Grateful Dead. The son of a New York doctor and a onetime traveling companion of Woody Guthrie, Elliott used his self-made cowboy image to bring his love of folk music to one generation after another. Despite the countless miles that Elliott traveled, his nickname is derived from his unique verbiage: an innocent question often led to a mosaic of stories before he got to the answer. According to folk songstress Odetta, it was her mother who gave Elliott the name when she remarked, "Oh, that Jack Elliott, he sure can ramble."

This album was recorded at a Philadelphia club on May 18, 1962. It has a good cross-section of the cowboy- and country-oriented folk Elliott liked to sing: Jimmie Rodgers' "Mule Skinner Blues," the Sons of the Pioneers' "Cool Water," "Boll Weevil," "How Long Blues," "Hobo's Lullaby," "Rock Island Line"; and, of course, a couple of "talking" Woody Guthrie tunes. It's perhaps a little more fun to hear than the average early 1960s Jack Elliott album, because the live ambience and spoken introductions and asides give it a warmer atmosphere than the earnest but plain studio recordings.

The album "Hootenanny With Jack Elliott" was originally released  as "Jack Elliott At The Second Fret" in 1962

Odetta - At The Gates Of Horn (1957)

Recorded in 1957, "At the Gate of Horn" is Odetta's sophomore effort and the first showcase of her extraordinary ability to interpret the American folk song. Her debut, "Sings Ballads and Blues", wasn't a bad album, but it lacked the depth and fullness of the latter work.

One notable difference, and a clue that Odetta wouldn't always toe the company line when it came to folk tradition, is the presence of bass player Bill Lee - film director Spike Lee's father. Lee's bass adds rhythm and another layer of depth to songs like "Take This Hammer" and "Chilly Winds." Lee's bouncy bass also allows Odetta to abandon more conventional guitar strumming for frills and fills that are complementary to her vocal style. "Sail Away Ladies," for instance, is highlighted by a propulsive guitar run (almost qualifying as a boogie), pushing the song forward and perfectly underpinning her vocal.

Although the title - "At the Gate of Horn" - suggests that the album is live, it isn't. The idea was to offer a replication of her Gate of Horn (a club in Chicago) show at the time. There are odds and ends that don't really work here. The arrangement of "Greensleeves" is clunky, with Lee's bass bumping around as Odetta gives the impression that she's auditioning for a classical recital. Overall, though, "At the Gate of Horn" still serves as an excellent introduction to one of America's finest folk interpreters. Her voice is something you'll never forget.

Rogério Duprat – Brasil Ano 2000 (1969, Trilha Sonora Do Filme) (Gal Costa, Gilberto Gil, Caetano Veloso)

Rogério Duprat (7 February 1932 - 26 October 2006) was a Brazilian composer, arranger, conductor and musician.

He is primarily known for his fundamental influence over the Tropicalia movement. But, he also is a successful composer of over 40 movie soundtracks, having also arranged music for several artists.

In 1968, Duprat wrote the arrangements for Gilberto Gil's album "Gilberto Gil", when both Gil and Caetano Veloso were arrested. The album was an attempt to avoid violence against them, as they would be connected with the broader society. The vocals were recorded in prison, with the two playing their own accompaniment on the violão along with a metronome and the rest of the instruments added later, subverting the basics of production. Also, Duprat wrote the arrangements for the collective-album/Tropicalia-manifest "Tropicália ou Panis et Circensis". He is the one holding a chamber pot on the album's cover as if it were a tea cup, together with the major names of Tropicalia. In that same year, he was the artistic director of another Tropicalia act, the show Momento 68 (which toured Brazil and South America), and wrote all arrangements for Nara Leão's album "Nara Leão". In the same year, he won the Galo de Ouro trophy, presented at TV Globo's III FIC, for his arrangements on Caetano's "É Proibido Proibir"; and the André Kostelanetz Trophy, for his arrangements for Caminhante Noturno. Also in that year, Duprat was the musical director for the famous Tropicalia show Divino Maravilhoso, and toured Europe with the Os Mutantes. In 1969, he wrote the arrangements for Caetano's album "Caetano Veloso", and, in 1973, for "Araçá Azul".

This is his soundtrack for "Brasil Ano 2000" with the voices of Caetano Veloco, Gal Coast, Gilberto Gil and others.

Prince Far I - Long Life (1978)

Prince Far I made several fine albums for the Virgin label's Front Line imprint in the late '70s. That relationship eventually soured, leading him to record the scathing "Virgin" several years later; probably the angriest artist-to-label kiss-off since Lee "Scratch" Perry accused Island label head Chris Blackwell of vampirism and murder. But while the relationship continued, it resulted in some of Prince Far I's most powerful work.

"Long Life" had its long-overdue CD reissue in 2002, a development that was especially welcome since none of its tracks had been included on the previous Front Line reissue compilations (Dubwise and Black Man Land). On these sessions, the rhythms are provided courtesy of a studio band made up of members of both Soul Syndicate (notably the killer bass-and-drums duo of Robbie Shakespeare and Sly Dunbar) and Roots Radics, and they are, without exception, as solid and heavy as a bag of boulders.

Prince Far I himself is in top form, rebuking Babylon on "Black Star Liner Must Come" and calling his fellow Rastafarians to repentance and renewed spiritual effort on such exhortative classics as "Remember Jah Jah" and "Love One Another." Some bonus tracks would have been nice (this album clocks in at a measly 32 minutes), but no one who has been seduced by Prince Far I's gravelly chant is going to quibble; it's been a long 25 years of waiting for this reissue, and we're all just happy to have it. Hanns Dieter Hüsch - Das neue Programm (1981)

Hanns Dieter Hüsch (6 May 1925, in Moers – 6 December 2005, in Windeck-Werfen) was a German author, cabaret artist, actor, songwriter and radio commentator.

With a working life of more than 53 years on the German cabaret stage and 70 of his own programmes he was one of the most productive and successful representatives of literary cabaret in Germany in the 20th century.

From 1965 on, Hüsch released phonograph records with literary cabaret pieces, chansons and poems - he sold more than 50 albums until his death. In 1967 he joined the left-wing German student movement and performed in Berlin on Burg Waldeck. But some elements of the student movement did not like Hüsch's non-violent attitude. They heckled his performances from June 1968 until August 1969 and "it was just as if your comrades told you that you are not good enough for the fight and that you have to give it up", said Hüsch. He was disappointed and hurt by their actions against his art, decided not to perform in Germany for years, and moved to Switzerland.

"Das neue Programm" was released in 1981 and is a live recording from Cologne, March 1981.

Esther & Abi Ofarim – Ofarim Concert - Live 1969

Esther & Abi Ofarim were an Israeli musical duo active during the 1960s, consisting of husband and wife Abi Ofarim and Esther Ofarim. They enjoyed particular success in Germany. They had hits in Europe with their songs "One More Dance," "Morning of My Life," and "Cinderella Rockefella."

Esther Ofarim (b. Esther Zaied, 13 June 1941, Zafed, Israel) and Avraham Reichstadt (b. 5 October 1937, Zafed, Israel, d. 4 May 2018, Munich, Germany) were a husband-and-wife team who shot to fame in their homeland during the early 60s. With a keen eye for the international market, Esther had represented Switzerland in the 1963 Eurovision Song Contest while the duo extended their appeal on the Continent via concert performances and foreign language recordings. They had their first hit in Germany in 1966 with ‘Noch Einen Tanz’, and the following year enjoyed even bigger success with their version of the Bee Gees’ ‘Morning Of My Life’. An appearance on the high-rating Eamonn Andrews Show on UK television, in which Esther and Abi sang a novelty love duet, proved so popular that the song became an overnight smash. ‘Cinderella Rockefella’ (composed by Mason Williams) topped the UK charts for three weeks in early 1968 and although the duo seemed likely one-hit wonders they managed a successful Top 20 follow-up with ‘One More Dance’. The partnership subsequently broke up when their marriage was dissolved. Esther Ofarim maintained a low-key solo career in the following decades.

Ofarim Concert – Live 1969 is a live album by Esther & Abi Ofarim, recorded during the duo's 1969 European tour and released in the same year by Philips Records.

Etta James - Rocks The House (1964)

Though the studio albums Etta James made for Chess in the 1960s usually had the blues singer surrounded by lush production and string-heavy arrangements, this live date finds her performing with only a rhythm section, organist, guitarist, and tenor saxophonist. The singer seems to respond to both the stripped-down setting and the enthusiastic audience with noticeable abandon. In fact, James the classy balladeer, a role she sometimes plays on her studio albums, is nowhere to be found on this blazing set.

The set is straight-edged blues and R&B, including covers of some hits of the day, like "Money (That's What I Want)" and Ray Charles' "What'd I Say." Jimmy Reed's "Baby What You Want Me to Do" (on which James does a growling, harmonica-imitating vocal solo) steps up the blues quotient. Etta James Rocks the House indeed.

Die Jeilen Träumer - Die Jeilen Träumer (1982, Trikont)

The political rock clown band "Ulrich Hundt und Schroeder" was found in 1975 and renamed shortly afterwards as "Schroeder Roadshow". They offered biting ironic and political texts as well as an eclectic musical style. The band attacked more or less everything, including themselves.

With their anarchistic slogans and subversiv statements, their great live shows and their sarcastic humor Schröder Roadshow were a very important part of the german polit rock subculture. Schroeder Roadshow was – besides Ton Steine Scherben – the german political rock band in the seventies and eighties of the last century.

In 1979 Gerd Köster became a member of the anarcho-rock-theater band. A year later, Frank Hocker joined Schroeder Roadshow. In the early eighties the band was one of the busiest live acts in Germany with up to 250 concerts a year. They released seven anarchistic polit-rock-albums with different line-ups and played at the WDR "Rockpalast" and BR "Rock aus dem Alabama".

During a "Schroeder Roadshow" break in 1982, Gerd Köster and Frank Hocker founded the rock quartet "Die Jeilen Traumer".

"You'll never break me!" sings Gerd Köster - and you believe his credo. For the band, rock music is "still the best remedy for cold showers".

Hanns Eisler - Septett Nr. 2, Nonett Nr. 1 & 2 (Nova, 1973)

As a Schoenberg pupil, political musician, peripatetic travellerand emigrant, musical and administrative visionary, and Brecht‟s closest musical collaborator, Hanns Eisler (1898-1962) inhabited many worlds. As a composer, he constantly sought to bridge the gaps between popular and “classical,” between the street and the concert hall, and between music for the masses and music for private, individual experience. He accompanied his prolific musical output with a steady of stream of writings and interviews characterized by the same sharp wit and dialectical thinking found in his music.

For Eisler, a committed Marxist, these different spheres were all part of the same conceptual universe, and sprang from his lifelong aim to create music useful to Socialism. Any composer, he believed, should be able to compose a marching song for a political demonstration, easy piano pieces for children, music for a Hollywood film, a large-scale symphony for chorus and orchestra, a lyrical song cycle, or a string quartet, depending on need and circumstances.

Eisler´s deportation from the U.S. after hearings before the House Committee on Un-American Activities as well as his status as East Germany‟s leading composer have colored his reception in western countries. Although Eisler has received increasing attention in recent years, his output of 15 orchestra works, 50 choruses, 23 chamber music works, 20 cantatas, c. 250 Lieder, 37 stage works und 39 film scores was largely neglected in the West during the Cold War, when the composer was known primarily as the composer of the East German naional anthem, “Auferstanden aus Ruinen.”

Art Blakey & The Jazz Messengers – At The Jazz Corner Of The World Vol. 1 (1959

In the '60s, when John Coltrane and Ornette Coleman were defining the concept of a jazz avant-garde, few knowledgeable observers would have guessed that in another 30 years the music's mainstream would virtually bypass their innovations, in favor of the hard bop style that free jazz had apparently supplanted. As it turned out, many listeners who had come to love jazz as a sophisticated manifestation of popular music were unable to accept the extreme esotericism of the avant-garde; their tastes were rooted in the core elements of "swing" and "blues," characteristics found in abundance in the music of the Jazz Messengers, the quintessential hard bop ensemble led by drummer Art Blakey. In the '60s, '70s, and '80s, when artists on the cutting edge were attempting to transform the music, Blakey continued to play in more or less the same bag he had since the '40s, when his cohorts included the likes of Charlie Parker, Miles Davis, and Fats Navarro. By the '80s, the evolving mainstream consensus had reached a point of overwhelming approval in regard to hard bop: this is what jazz is, and Art Blakey -- as its longest-lived and most eloquent exponent -- was its master.

This first of two LPs features a transitional version of The Jazz Messengers with longtime members drummer Art Blakey, trumpeter Lee Morgan, pianist Bobby Timmons and bassist Jymie Merritt being joined by tenor saxophonist Hank Mobley who was with the group briefly between Benny Golson and Wayne Shorter. This live set is highlighted by Mobley's "Just Coolin'" and Thelonious Monk's "Justice," although the other selections (including Mobley's funky "Hipsippy Blues") are all quite enjoyable.

André Heller – Bei lebendigem Leib - Live (1975)

"Bei lebendigem Leib" features live recordings from André Heller´s 1975 tour through 27 cities in Germany, Austria and Swiss. here. The lyrics are all in German or often Viennese dialect - and they are a pleasure if you understand this language.

If you're a fan of progressive music, you meet some old friends here. Richard Schönherz (piano) and Emanuel Rigoni (drums) published their symphonic prog album "Victor" on the Bacillus label the same year, in 1975, and they also wrote most of the songs here for André Heller. Kurt Hauenstein (bass) founded the (sorry!) Prog-Disco Band Supermax in Munich a year later, in 1976. Richard Schönherz (piano) is still active, together with Angelica Fleer, as Schönherz & Fleer, they lately released a series of CDs under the title "Rilke Projekt", compilations of various artists with lyrics by Rainer Maria Rilke. So the whole band is a crazy bunch. Enjoy !

André Heller - Verwunschen (1980)

"Verwunschen" was the 11th studio album by André Heller and it´s a kind of a concept album with a lot of autobiographic elements. It was recorded between 4.6.-3.8.1980 at Sound mill studio Vienna.

André Heller
is an Austrian chanson singer, performance actor, composer, writer and cultural managar, born 22 March 1947,  in Vienna,

In his early years, he was attracted by Vienna's literature scene, where he met Helmut Qualtinger and H.C. Artmann. In 1967 he co-founded the austrian radio station Ö3.

One year later, in 1968 he released his first LP, mostly singing his own lyrics and combining them with typical viennese music and jazz. First success came with his second album "Platte" in 1970. In his career he worked with Astor Piazzolla, Freddie Hubbard and Chaka Khan, just to name a few. He also collaborated with the greatest singers and musicians of Austria and Germany, including Helmut Qualtinger, Ingfried Hoffmann and Peter Wolf. From 1970-1984 he was married to Erika Pluhar, who also released a couple of records with Hellers lyrics.

In 1982, he stopped his musical career due to too much success, cause he didnt want to perform for audiences just because they had paid for it and not getting at the same time anymore fun out of it for himself. He released 14 albums. Afterwards he focused on theatre, what he had started parallel to his singing career. He activly played in several movies and theatre productions, as well realized own projects. He also founded "Zirkus Roncalli", designed "Swarovski Kristallwelten", created sculptures for the "World Cup 2006 in Germany" and worked on projects worldwide in countries like India, Israel, Morocco, Hongkong and Japan.

André Heller - Stimmenhören (1983)

André Heller was born in 1947 in Vienna. As a poet songwriter, his work spans across a period of more than 15 years selecting diverse topics and writing for a German-speaking audience. He has worked with not only international names such as Ástor Piazzolla, Dino Saluzzi, and Freddie Hubbard, but also with Austrian artists such as Toni Stricker, Wolfgang Ambros, and Helmut Qualtinger. Heller's own poetry has been set to music. He has also sung texts by other authors. For instance, "Catherine", from 1970, was set to one of the first hits of Heller. The text came from the then still largely unknown Reinhard Mey, and the music from the Austro-Canadian Jack Grunsky.

With Werner Schneyder, he created Viennese German songs that are translated from Jacques Brel, such as "Franz" (after the Brel title "Jef"). In 1976, he published a fairy tale called, Märchen für ein Wiener Kind (English version as "A Fairy Tale for a Viennese Child"), which is part of the children's book Update on Rumpelstiltskin and other Fairy Tales by 43 Authors, which is compiled by Hans-Joachim Gelberg, illustrated by Willi Glasauer, and published by Beltz & Gelberg. Using intimate memories of traumatic childhood experiences, and insights into his life, as well as his Catholic-Jewish origin, he created songs with the title "Angstlied" (Verwunschen, 1980).

Titles like "Miruna, die Riesin von Göteborg" (Verwunschen, 1980) are, in turn, influenced by the Vienna School of Fantastic Realism. "Das Lied vom idealen Park" (Narrenlieder 1985), or, as a duet with Wolfgang Ambros, he also introduced the Bob Dylan cover, "Für immer jung" (Stimmenhören, 1983), are now titles that are part of the Austro-pop cannon. In 1983, he appeared on Stimmenhören with the song "Erhebet euch Geliebte", a song at the time of the peace movement in the early 1980s. Since the early 1980s, he turned increasingly to large public productions, installations and performances, until 1982, where his concert career came to close.

In 1985, the album, Narrenlieder, was released. Between 1967 and 1985, he published a total of fourteen LPs, twelve of those were gold records, and earned him seven times platinum. In 1991, he wrote, looking back on this period:
"I started in 1967, to put my poems together using my voice on record and in recitals before millions of people. This was following the example of Bob Dylan's first meaningful and self-published poetry [...] 1982 was certainly the zenith of that career, where I had to stop my concerts. I realized at this point, it was spoiled for me, because at 8pm, I had to act gifted in front of a few thousand listeners, just because they had paid for admission." – Heller in the liner notes of Kritische Gesamtausgabe published in 1991.
However, on his 60th birthday, Heller gave a concert in April 2007 at the Viennese Radiokulturhaus, after twenty-five years of absence from the stage in a recital entitled, Konzert für mich (Concert for me).

In 2006, thanks to the initiative of Chris Gelbmann, he released his last album called, Ruf und Echo. The 3-CD compendium is the first release in the past 20 years, containing new songs, and interpretations of old hits by artists like Brian Eno, Xavier Naidoo, Thomas D, and The Walkabouts.

VA - Wien - Zoten und Pikanterien - Rare Schellacks 1906 - 1932

Throughout the world, the rise of mass culture in the 19th century brought the music of the common man to the forefront of the popular agenda. Expressions of "high culture" no longer dominated in the big cities. The taste of recently-urbanised country migrants was increasingly catered for.

Since the turn of the 20th century popular melodies, folk songs, humorous commentaries and dance music with a hard edge gained widespread acceptance. In the suburbs of Vienna, Berlin, Munich, Leipzig and Dresden new types of urban folk singers and entertainers emerged at the cutting edge of recreation. Their songs reflected the dissonant and raucous reality of urban life in harsh and critical lyrics, but always modified by a pinch of irony and a considerable amount of humor.

The commercial recording industry recognized the mass appeal of these emergent syncretic forms and a representative sample from that early period is featured on this series.

"Beat Jazz" is a out-of-print 20 track compilation of cool 50s style jazzy beat numbers. Kind of
Beat era recordings from spoken word, to sung poetry, to bebop, to doo-wop, to R&B, to hipster and jive....

From the web:
"this is one beautiful collection of beat music,
spoken word and crazed goofballed lyrics. Way out there selections
of many unknown beat artists at their most primitive level spewing
forth underground sounds and styles of a bygone era. No Zane or kitch
here but straight ahead songs that ooze the beat feel! This is a
fantastic selection of music. For me its the beat of this genre..."

Richie Havens – Live At The Cellar Door And The Santa Monica Civic Auditorium

Wonderful live helping of Richie Havens doing some of his most evocative songs ever. His patter is great too. Easily a four star album, dunno why AM gave it so few, probably just the automatic bias against live discs. If you dig Richie Havens, you absolutely should acquire this superb work.

The album features two concerts from Richie's early-'70s peak; in fact, this performance at the Cellar Door is the one from which his hit recording of Here Comes the Sun was taken! And the Santa Monica show was taped by remote recording whiz Wally Heider, so EXCELLENT sound. Also includes Fire and Rain; God Bless the Child; All Along the Watchtower; No More, No More; Dolphins, and more.

Highly recommended.

Georg Danzer - Der Tschik (1974)

Georg Danzer reigned for decades among Austria's most popular and influential singers/songwriters, exploring subjects both personal and political via the mordant wit that underscores the collective Viennese consciousness.

Born in Vienna on October 7, 1946, Danzer began studying guitar at age 13. The 1967 release of the Beatles' landmark "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band" inspired him to begin writing original material, and a year later he issued his debut solo single, "Vera."

While Danzer's early records sold poorly, he was deeply respected by his fellow musicians, who eagerly covered his songs. By the end of the decade, he was a pivotal figure in the German-language liedermacher ("song-maker") movement and would later be recognized as a founder of what was eventually dubbed Austro-pop.

During the early '70s Danzer led the Madcaps, scoring a series of cult hits including "John Wayne," before resuming his solo career with the classic 1974 LP "Der Tätowierer und die Mondprinzessin." Breakthrough singles including "Jö Schau," "Wixer-Blues," "War das Etwa Haschish?," and most notably the modern standard "Morgenrot" not only vaulted the singer to superstar status but also earned the enmity of broadcast standards and practices, resulting in a string of radio bans and boycotts that served only to elevate his profile even higher. At the end of the decade Danzer settled in Germany, and his popularity back home suffered as a result. While filming a music video in Spain in 1984, he was critically injured in a motorcycle accident, and a year later longtime label Polydor terminated his contract.

Upon returning to Vienna in 1992, Danzer enjoyed a commercial and creative renaissance. A lifelong smoker, he died from lung cancer in St. Pölten, Austria, on June 21, 2007.

Count Basie - At Newport (1957)

At the 1957 Newport Jazz Festival, the music was consistently inspired and often historic. Count Basie welcomed back tenor great Lester Young and singer Jimmy Rushing for part of a very memorable set highlighted by "Boogie Woogie" and "Evenin'";

Young plays beautifully throughout and Rushing is in prime form. An exciting full-length version of "One O'Clock Jump" features Young, Illinois Jacquet, and trumpeter Roy Eldridge; the Basie band stretches out on "Swingin' at Newport"; and five previously unreleased selections (put out for the first time on this CD) include four Joe Williams vocals. It's a great set of music.
