VA - Dubnology 2: Lost In Bass (1996)

Let´s go back in time to the dubby 1990s for the second volume...

Like its predecessor, "Dubnology, Vol. 2" is a two-disc collection of dub tracks that rely on electronics and technology to create their spacy, bass-heavy, echo-laden effects.

The album features a lot of well done electronic music in different styles - a nice mix of music from the well known and not-so-well-known exponents of this genre

Volume Two has more experimental material by the likes of Zion Train, Alien, and the Knights of the Occasional Table, but those are mixed with more pop-oriented tracks by Underworld, Dubstar, Massive Attack vs. Mad Professor, and others - nice one!

Richie Havens – Live At The Cellar Door And The Santa Monica Civic Auditorium

Wonderful live helping of Richie Havens doing some of his most evocative songs ever. His patter is great too. Easily a four star album, dunno why AM gave it so few, probably just the automatic bias against live discs. If you dig Richie Havens, you absolutely should acquire this superb work.

The album features two concerts from Richie's early-'70s peak; in fact, this performance at the Cellar Door is the one from which his hit recording of Here Comes the Sun was taken! And the Santa Monica show was taped by remote recording whiz Wally Heider, so EXCELLENT sound. Also includes Fire and Rain; God Bless the Child; All Along the Watchtower; No More, No More; Dolphins, and more.

Highly recommended.

Georg Danzer - Der Tschik (1974)

Georg Danzer reigned for decades among Austria's most popular and influential singers/songwriters, exploring subjects both personal and political via the mordant wit that underscores the collective Viennese consciousness.

Born in Vienna on October 7, 1946, Danzer began studying guitar at age 13. The 1967 release of the Beatles' landmark "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band" inspired him to begin writing original material, and a year later he issued his debut solo single, "Vera."

While Danzer's early records sold poorly, he was deeply respected by his fellow musicians, who eagerly covered his songs. By the end of the decade, he was a pivotal figure in the German-language liedermacher ("song-maker") movement and would later be recognized as a founder of what was eventually dubbed Austro-pop.

During the early '70s Danzer led the Madcaps, scoring a series of cult hits including "John Wayne," before resuming his solo career with the classic 1974 LP "Der Tätowierer und die Mondprinzessin." Breakthrough singles including "Jö Schau," "Wixer-Blues," "War das Etwa Haschish?," and most notably the modern standard "Morgenrot" not only vaulted the singer to superstar status but also earned the enmity of broadcast standards and practices, resulting in a string of radio bans and boycotts that served only to elevate his profile even higher. At the end of the decade Danzer settled in Germany, and his popularity back home suffered as a result. While filming a music video in Spain in 1984, he was critically injured in a motorcycle accident, and a year later longtime label Polydor terminated his contract.

Upon returning to Vienna in 1992, Danzer enjoyed a commercial and creative renaissance. A lifelong smoker, he died from lung cancer in St. Pölten, Austria, on June 21, 2007.

Count Basie - At Newport (1957)

At the 1957 Newport Jazz Festival, the music was consistently inspired and often historic. Count Basie welcomed back tenor great Lester Young and singer Jimmy Rushing for part of a very memorable set highlighted by "Boogie Woogie" and "Evenin'";

Young plays beautifully throughout and Rushing is in prime form. An exciting full-length version of "One O'Clock Jump" features Young, Illinois Jacquet, and trumpeter Roy Eldridge; the Basie band stretches out on "Swingin' at Newport"; and five previously unreleased selections (put out for the first time on this CD) include four Joe Williams vocals. It's a great set of music.

VA - Yelé Brazil

Though not quite as expansive as "The Rough Guide to the Music of Brazil" or the four-CD "Brasil: A Century of Song" boxed set, this 16-track compilation provides a wonderful introduction to the vibrant musical cultural of Brazil, where music is an integral entity that permeates nearly every aspect of daily life.

Ara Ketu, who presents three tracks here, is representative of how seamlessly African musical traditions were integrated into the Brazilian sound, with complex syncopated percussion worked into an accessible pop sound that combines elements of African soukous and Brazilian samba. Paralamas, a Rio-based group who contributes two songs here, craftily combines Brazilian rhythms with the visceral energy of Two-Tone ska, the end result sounding a bit like a South American version of General Public. With a number of other standout tracks from diverse artists like samba/reggae fusionists Banda Reflexu and traditional drummer Dorival Caymmi, "Yele Brazil" makes a fine starting point for your Brazilian music immersion.

Tracklist:

Elis Regina – Samba, Eu Canto Assim (1965)

Elis Regina was one of the most ferociously talented singers to emerge from Brazil. A perfectionist who was frequently dissatisfied, Regina drove herself and members of her band relentlessly, leading to her being dubbed "Hurricane" and "Little Pepper" by musicians and journalists. Her tempestuous nature aside, she commanded the respect of Brazil's leading songwriters, who lined up for the chance to have her record one of their songs, and for much of her short life was the country's most popular female vocalist.

Leading a brassy main-room orchestra, Elis Regina exerts a considerable amount of power on 1965's "Samba, Eu Canto Assim". She swings her way through Edu Lobo's "Rez" while the strings saw sweetly in the background and salutes great Brazilian composers ranging from Dorival Caymmi ("João Valentão"), Marcos Valle ("Preciso Aprender a Ser So"), and Vinicius and Baden Powell (a potpourri comprising "Consolação," "Berimbau," and "Tem Dó").
