Utah Phillips - The Telling Takes Me Home (1997)

A compilation of tracks from 2El Capitan" and "All Used Up: A Scrapbook", "The Telling Takes Me Home" is a quick tour around the styles of Utah Phillips, whose music and concerns incorporate several genres of folk and country (and comedy as well, this being the gentleman who gave the world "Moose-Turd Pie").
Phillips is a compelling performer, a bear-like presence who commands attention through his music. This 20-track collection could serve as a very good introduction.

This is absolutely great stuff. If you know Utah only by having heard his famous story "Moose Turd Pie," this album would be a great place to dive in and get a fuller picture of his music. His "up with the little guy" politics clearly shine through on many of the tracks, as does his love of history and the American West. Utah's take on the West is different from the cliches of movie and TV westerns. He saw it as a place where people strived and struggled and where both the people and the land were often defeated by the power of money. In this album, he's turned that sensibility into some wonderful songs about both the modern and the Old West.

Thank-you for posting this collection. Utah was a friend, mentor and performer I presented many times over the years. He was a fascinating man- warm, kind, curious and passionate about justice and the possibility for change.
It's dark outside and 20 below zero as I write this, but listening to a few of his song will put a warm glow on the evening.
Respect,
d

ps- ever heard Tom Waits' version of the Good-Night Loving Trail? It's pretty tasty....
