His work in theatre, in film, in cabaret and as a singer has always been political - whether in Germany, Spain or in exile, from the November Revolution to the 1920s and the period of fascism to the years in the GDR.

As a fighter for the `cause of the proletariat` he still belongs to the legacy of the working-class movement."
