George Duke was an accomplished keyboardist, producer, arranger, bandleader, and composer. He was successful in both popular music and jazz, and straddled both sides of that aisle for most of his career.
Released in 1969, this release contains an eclectic mix of pop-rock material with jazz arrangements (along with a brass section). It has the sense of a big band feeling at times. Songs covered include songs by Laura Nyro, Judy Collins, and Joe South. He also does a RnB/Jazz cover of the Beatles "Come Together". The reason for the the overall sound might be the time spent with the Don Ellis progressive big band he was working with right before he recorded this, using some of the musicians from the same band. After this release he would start working with Frank Zappa and in 1971 he would start releasing albums on the German MPS label which is where he really came into his own as an artist. This album has it's moments...
