Wolf Biermann - 4 neue Lieder - Wagenbachs Quartplatte 3 (1968)

The Third Way position gained additional support due to the popularity of Wolf Biermann. During his conflicts with the SED in the GDR he had successfully portrayed himself as a "true communist" while at the same time an influential critic of Eastern Bloc communism. Through his performance and travel ban as well as the release of his records in the West he had become the most famous political singer in Germany. After his expatriation from the GDR in 1976 he had quickly established contact with the folk and Liedermacher scene of West Germany and become a leading, albeit controversial political figure.

"Der Dritte Weg" was represented nationwide by "Das Sozialistische Büro" in Offenbach (foundd 1969) and its newspaper, "links". "Sozialistische Zentren" existed at a regional level.
